How it works

8 WEEK COURSES

BOOKED IN ‘TERMS’

Learning to row, especially from beginner level, takes some time. That’s why we structure everything in 8-week terms. When you book with us, you’ll book a whole 8 week block of sessions. This is so you can pick everything up, and get the best introduction to rowing possible!

Higher levels, such as Experienced and Advanced, have much more flexibility, and can be booked mid-way through a term if needed.

Every ‘term’ has a name such as ‘Summer’ or ‘Autumn 1’. They kick off every 8 weeks. If you have missed the start date of your desired term, the next opportunity to get involved will be the start date of the upcoming term!

Catch-up sessions

Added flexibility if you miss a session

Book a Catch-Up Session

Sometimes life gets in the way – we get it!

We offer the ability to book a ‘catch-up’ session if there is a session you can’t attend. As long as you give at least 48 hours’ notice, you can cancel a session and look for a catch-up slot in another boat, so that you don’t miss out!

This is done using our booking portal. Once your term begins, we’ll send out an email detailing how to book a catch-up session.

Because we rely on others also giving notice for non-attendance, we cannot guarantee availability for catch-up sessions. This is a service that is provided as a courtesy, and your original 8 sessions are the ones purchased and reserved for you. Read our full Terms & Conditions.

Book using our portal

We now have a portal system which allows you to book and manage your sessions easily.

When you book with us, you’ll need to make a portal account. (We ask that you add a photo so we can idenfity you during your lessons!)

FAQ

What class should I sign up for if I have never set foot in a rowing boat?
Our Beginner course is perfect for anyone who is new to rowing on the water!
What happens after I complete Beginner level and I want to row more?

Sign up for our development program! An eight-week course that allows you to take your rowing skills to the next level.

Do I need to know how to swim?

To join our adult rowing programs, yes. Rowing takes place on the water, and while falling out of the boat is very unlikely, it is possible.

Do you require a swim test?

We do not require adult rowers to pass a swim test, however we recommend that you are able to swim at least 50m. Rowers undertake risk themselves when they register with us – if you do not feel confident around water then we advise against signing up.

What is the refund/credit policy?

When you sign up, we reserve your slot for you. Therefore within 6 weeks of the course starting, we cannot give full refunds (as it’s hard to fill your spot again).

Within 2 weeks of the term start date, we can’t refund you. However, if you email us we will do our best to help find a resolution.

Do I need to attend all classes?

Since the skills you learn in rowing are cumulative, it is important that you make every effort to come to each class so you learn along with your group.

If you don’t come, your crew won’t have as good a session, because rowing a boat with just 2 or 3 people isn’t as fun!

If you have completed 5 or less sessions at the end of the term, you wont receive your course certificate.

You should always cancel your session in advance using your portal if you can’t attend, as this allows us to offer your spot to someone else as a ‘catch-up’.

Can I make up classes that I miss?

We offer make-up sessions on a selective basis, depending on availability. We need notice of absence 48 hours in advance in order to be able to offer make-up slots.

Do we still have sessions in bad weather?

Yes! We row on the water in the rain and the cold, but if there is thunder and lightning or it is very windy, we may run training sessions indoors. Classes will not be rescheduled due to weather.

What should I wear?

Layers are your best bet for cold weather rowing. Keep in mind that the clothes you wear will very likely get dirty so please wear clothing that you do not mind getting wet. It is best to wear form-fitting clothing like Lycra. This type of clothing is less likely to get in the way while rowing.

You’ll also need a comfy pair of trainers to wear in the boat. Oh, and bring a spare pair of socks (just in case!)

Are there showers and changing rooms at the boathouse?

There is a shower and a small changing room. Feel free to change once you arrive at the boathouse – however we recommend arriving ready to row.

Where can I park?

Parking at the Putney Embankment is not advisable, however, there are some limited back streets where you can find free parking.
